About
The Department of Sociology at MahapurushSrimantaSankaradeva University is established in 2014 with Master Degree Programme. It is a scrupulous programme based on innovative pedagogical practices. Through meticulous teaching/training programmes and holistic education, the department is devoted towards creating competent and socially aware graduates. The course curriculum of the department at M.A. (CBCS), level has been prepared keeping in view the manpower requirements in various industrial organizations and other departments of both public and private sectors. Subsequently, B.A (Major) and M. Phil programmes have launched in 2017 and the Ph.D programme has started in 2018 respectively.
Moreover, all the academic programmes are intended to provide a strong foundation of the students in the discipline of sociology. Students are always encouraging to engage themselves with contemporary concerns and issues of life throughout the understanding of different classical as well as modern and post-modern sociological interpretations.

1.B.A. (Major)
Eligibility for Admission to B.A. (Major) Programmes: A student who passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) Examination of the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, or any equivalent examination recognised as such by the University shall be eligible for admission to the First Semester of the Six Semester B.A. (Major) programme. This is a six-semester programme based on choice based credit system.
2.M.A. in Sociology
Eligibility for Admission of the student is At least 45% marks in Major in Sociology and other equivalent subjects or 45% marks in aggregate in M.A Programme. The Duration of this Programme is 2 years with 4-Semesters.The Intake Capacity is 40 Numbers of students per semester. The Method of Selection of the student is giving preference on merit of the candidates having Major in sociology as well as other disciplines.

Departmental Activities
Department of Sociology has continuously organises different activities for the overall development of students such as group discussions of Course contents as well as different contemporary issues , quiz competition, extempore speech Competition , presentations by the teachers and students, movie screening, filed work, educational tour as a part of the course work.
Departmental Publication:
Each year, Department of Sociology prepares one wall magazine named “Horizon” and one hand written magazine named “The Social Sentinel”.
